Best thing about teaching?
The ‘lightbulb moments’ when a student gets it, the times when students ask why you were not in class if you have been at a meeting (relationships matter) and the privilege we have in shaping young lives in a positive way.
-
Best city you've ever visited/lived in?
Munich for its unusual Olympic Stadium and Ljubljana (where I got locked in the airport - but that's a whole other story!).
-
A song you listen to when happy/sad?
Dave Matthews - Stay (Wastin' Time); Blur - The Universal (and Britpop in general).
-
Biggest education inspiration?
Too hard to choose between Paul Carlile for showing just how powerful relationships can be, and Mary Myatt for her phrases!
-
Describe your TTR shows in one sentence:
Inspired by one or two other TTR hosts, sometimes off script and with the occasional spaniel noise in the background.
-
Favourite TTR guest (on one of your shows):
Sophie Bartlett talking about the wonderful things we could do with the curriculum if there were no SATs.
-
Favourite TTR episode (of yours) so far and why? School dogs - my first show. I was so scared but so happy afterwards!
-
Your teaching philosophy?
Build relationships first and foremost (with staff as well as students).
-
Best bit of advice you ever got?
Do the things that make you happy.
-
Dream guest on your TTR show?
My Nan, sadly no longer with us but so ahead of her time. You didn't go off to Canada on your own as a woman to work/travel in the 1950s but she did because she believed you did what you wanted, not what society thought you should do. I can only imagine what she might say about some of the current issues we face!
